About ISKCON

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) was started in 1966 by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. He came from India determined to spread Krishna consciousness—far and wide—in an organised way. Since like-minded souls thrive in each others company, he wanted to create a society in which Krishna devotees could share their realizations and strengthen their faith.

ISKCON started as a tiny “community” of a dozen or so members, who met Wednesday and Friday evenings in a tiny storefront on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Because of Prabhupada’s determination, from 1966 until his passing in 1977 it grew to become a truly international society of thousands of Krishna devotees, with over a hundred temples, schools, restaurants, and farm communities.
